Bats Bats in Southern Ontario are either of the Large Brown or Small Brown species. Bats will often live in attics of human structures and other voids. Females raise their young together in “nurseries” early in the summer season and in August or later bats are often seen flying from dusk on into the night. Bats are beneficial creatures as they often will eat their weight in insects daily (including mosquitoes and other nuisance pests). However, bats can carry rabies and their droppings often contain materials that negatively affect human health. Brown Bats are excellent fliers and, contrary to myth, do not get in people's hair, nor do they attack humans or other animals. Ridding a structure of bats involves an inspection and the installation of one-way devices that get bats out of a structure while not allowing them re-entry; sealing of all cracks and holes of more than ½ inch is also necessary as bats can enter through very small holes.
