Bed Bugs Bed Bugs have become an epidemic in Southern Ontario, particularly urban areas. An unfed bed bug is small, often less than ¼ inch in length, but after feeding on the blood of a mammal (most often humans) this insect can become many times its original size. Unfed Bed Bugs are black in colour, taking on a brownish or reddish tinge after feeding on blood; their droppings are brown and red in colour. Bed Bugs lay three to four eggs a day (200 in a lifetime) and spread via clothing, travel baggage, used furniture, beds and laundry, among other sources. Bed Bugs are NOT associated with pathogens or human diseases, however, can cause anemia in severe infestations. Bed Bugs are difficult to treat. The biology of the Bed Bug and the rapidity of its repopulation of North America has presented the pest management industry with a major challenge. Bed Bugs are excellent at obscuring themselves and treatments must be thorough and repeated in order to succeed; preparations on customers’ parts are crucial.
