Earwigs

The European Earwig, or Forficula auricularia, has become an important household pest in the GTA and surrounding areas. Earwigs can devastate garden growth and agricultural plants in very short periods of time; they also are classified as “Occasional Invaders” in homes and businesses, often interrupting domestic life and production. Earwigs are readily identifiable by their large pinchers or forceps like appendages at the end of their abdomens. Earwigs are primarily scavengers on dead animal and plant material, but some species are predatory.

Earwig control must be approached using Integrated Pest Management approaches. Moisture and breeding site control, yard maintenance, building repair, crop watering and soil treatment(s) as well as insecticide applications are beneficial.
