Sow and Pill Bugs These two are members of the crustacean family and are more closely related to lobsters than insects. Both feed on deteriorating organic matter and enjoy cracks and crevices that are dark and damp. Occasionally both will enter structures from the outside and be noted, usually dehydrated on basement floors. To distinguish between the two, note that Pill Bugs are able to roll up in a ball, while the larger Sow Bugs cannot. Pill and Sow Bugs are indicators of conditions of high moisture and perhaps water leakage. As with many pests, these two point the way to structural or landscape damage/faults and should be inspected with these factors in mind. Actions to eliminate these pests can be complex and training, inspection skills and knowledge are the keys to elimination.
